This past Saturday, Cali and I had to run a fruit salad to town at 8:00 am for a wedding.  Since the boys were still home asleep and the highway was empty except for 5 cop cars which insured we took our time, the car was quiet and we visited about a myriad of topics:  fruit salad, weddings, Easter baskets, what to have for Sunday dinner, the virtues of Costco produce vs. the unpleasantries of Walmart produce . . . and the future.

We determined that looking forward is important, but dwelling on the future is counter-productive. There are so many unknowns to prepare for in likely situations, let alone all the unlikely situations that are bound to happen that it can put your mind in a spin.  We decided we should prepare for the future the best we can, and that includes increasing our faith, but then to fully live today. It wasn't a new discovery, but it was our Saturday morning resolution.

I was looking through my Pinterest boards this evening and saw this one by Corrie ten Boom.  As a holocaust prisoner she faced such a bleak future (and even facing a good future can be daunting), and gave us a good example of how to live with the unknown.  This pin is a good reminder for me of the conclusion we reached on Saturday.  Here's to the future Cali (clink).

Rouva Jones oli muutaman päivän Pariisissa. Muutama satsi postauksia tulossa, nyt ekana pari kuvaa hotellilta. Hotellimme oli pikkuinen designhotelli Maraisissa, Hotel Emile. Pieni, mutta tosi ihana. Sijainti oli loistava Rue de Rivolin varrella ( kaikki Maraisin palvelut ja museot aivan kulman takana) ja kävelimme toooosi paljon. Metrokin (Saint Paul)oli aivan hotellin vieressä. Muutamat kuvat vinksallaan, sori. Huoneemme tapettina Cole&Sonin ihanuus ja kylpyhuone se vasta hauska oli...lasikuutio huoneen kulmassa. Lattia oli marmoria ja seinät metrolaattaa. Suosittelen ehdottomasti hotellia Pariisiin matkaavalle. Suoraan hotellin oven vieressä oli La Favorite, jossa nautimme niin brunssia kuin yöpalaa. Maraisissa kiertelimme myös muutamissa kaupoissa, tulossa postaus Mercistä. Nautimme päivien kiireettömyydestä ja jätimme pakolliset nähtävyydet väliin ( mies on asunut aikanaan Pariisissa ja minäkin siellä nähtävyydet kiertänyt). Centre Pompidoussa kyllä poikkesimme katsomassa Henri Cartier-Bressonin näyttelyn. Ja joo, kävelimme myös Eiffelin ohi.

IFFB 2014 opened tonight with BENEATH THE HARVEST SKY, a beautiful film about Casper and Dominic, best friends growing up in a farming town on the Canadian border, and a Harvest Week that changes their lives. The week off from school in Van Buren, Maine is an opportunity for Dominic to make some money working on the potato harvest, while Casper earns by working for his father, who's in the business of smuggling drugs across the border. The boys have a pact of sorts: pool the money they make to leave this small nowhere dead-end town and make their way in the world. Alas, the people closest to each of them all seem intent on keeping them there, one way or another.

The directors Aron Gaudet and Gita Pullapilly, soundtrack artist Dustin Hamman, and co-star Aidan Gillen (Tommy Carcetti of THE WIRE) were present for Q&A after and the directors mentioned their hope/goal was to make the kind of film that they grew up loving, a STAND BY ME or THE OUTSIDERS, that just doesn't seem to be made these days. I think they've succeeded in creating an heir to those films. Something true to the relationships of those films, but different in style, and excellent in style. The directors' previous work has been documentary, and that seems to inform what they've created in HARVEST SKY. It feels real.

It doesn't hurt any that Emory Cohen, who plays Caspar, is remarkable in his role. I think the proper critical non-hyperbolic hyperbole would be "a revelation." The directors explained that most people on set called Emory—or only knew him as—Caspar. Musician Dustin Hamman shared a story about spending a night in one of the film locations with Caspar, and when Emory, apparently ready to break character, offered to tell Dustin his real name. Dustin replied something like, "No, man. That's okay. I don't want to know." Why mess with the mojo, right?

Emory is really frickin good.

In power (please excuse the vague term) and style, casting and performances, minutes in, the film reminded me of WINTER'S BONE. It wasn't a deja vu thing in any way, and it really only crossed my mind once, but for me there's something sympathetic between the two films. Or at least my memory of them. Would make for a very satisfying double feature, if you're feeling up to some darkness with your coming-of-age stories.

 Elephants have long held special cultural significance in Thailand, as symbols of both the royal family and Buddhism. Yet, for Kham, Korhn is no mere pachyderm. He is his spiritual brother. One afternoon, an elephant dealer’s sketchy lackeys drop by, offering what they consider a ridiculously generous price for Korhn. Naturally, after telling them off, Kham pops down to the market, leaving his elephant home alone. Seriously, that practically constitutes negligence. Launching a frontal on assault on the elephant fence’s villa, Kham finds old Boss Suchart already dead and his purloined elephant nowhere to be found. Not only has he obligingly stepped into the frame-job, Suchart’s martial arts proficient, sailor suit wearing nieces are quite upset with him.

phantasmagorical, computer-generated monstrosity were battling it out for the summer box office gold. But that was almost a year ago, and the studios are lining up their next big budget juggernauts to enter the annual gladiatorial arena that is the summer movie season. One early contender for the biggest prize: Sony's "Amazing Spider-Man 2," which has just unleashed a new trailer (although if you watched the 4-minute post-Super Bowl spot, chances are you've seen most of it) and promises to be one of the bigger spectacles this summer.

By now you've probably got the idea behind "Amazing Spider-Man 2:" Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) continues to struggle with his budding high school romance with Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone), while battling some wicked new foes in the form of the Rhino (Paul Giamatti), Electro (Jamie Foxx) and a new Green Goblin (Dane DeHaan, playing Norman Osborne's son, Harry). This thing is chock full of villains!

And while the visuals on display in this trailer are genuinely jaw-dropping (even more so in 3D, we'd imagine), it is kind of worrisome that we have now seen at least pieces of what appears to be every major set piece in the movie. Sony doesn't seem shy about showing off the footage, but sometimes taking a page from the J.J. Abrams secret playbook is preferred: leave us wanting more, not feeling over-saturated.

Hopefully there are still some goodies to be had when "Amazing Spider-Man 2" gets unleashed on May 2.

23 April 2014 Film of Choice at The Plaza Dorchester Tonight - The Love Punch. A gloriously jolly romp starring Pierce Brosnan, Celia Imrie, Timothy Spall and the marvellous Emma Thompson who is nothing short of a national treasure. This is a lighthearted tale based on a fairly serious premise of a company being taken over and and stripped of it's assets without a single thought of what's going to happen to the employees. With everyone having lost their financial security, Richard (Brosnan) makes a promise to sort everything out and with ex wife Kate (Thompson) he enlists the services of their neighbours (Imrie and Spall) and the computer expertise of their son to embark on an adventure to get back what is rightfully theirs. Set mainly in Paris and the South of France, this film keeps you amused throughout and the four main characters work splendidly together to the gentle conclusion. Great Weymouth reference too!!!
